The void left by the disappearance of much of Mac’s subtle ribbing is arresting, bringing to mind the initial shock felt by early listeners of Beck’s bummer-study standout Sea Change.
The heavy-lidded jams of Demarco’s breakthrough record 2, and later on Salad Days, are largely absent on This Old Dog, replaced by the sounds of a more introspective crooner staring mortality right in the eyeballs.

Since then, some of my favorite songs of demarco’s have become the more upbeat “ still beating,” “ my old man,” both off of “ this old dog,” “ freaking out the neighborhood,” from “ 2,” and “ chamber of reflection,” from the album “ salad days.” you should check them all out, along with his older work, which is also high quality stuff. with the mixture of the electronic beat and demarco’s soft voice on the chorus, i was instantly drawn to hear more. what this feature does is mix in songs that are similar to those that you already listen to, and put them all into a corresponding playlist for convienient listening. i came across “ on the level” by the grace of spotify’s “music discovery” algorithm, (another shoutout to russ) after listening to my “daily mix two” in early february. i seriously had not heard of him previously, as i admittedly did with other groups and artists like brockhampton and russ. also in 2012, the album “ 2” was released, and in 2014, demarco followed up with “ salad days.” since then, “ this old dog” was released in 2017.Īlthough he has obviously been around and making music for a substantial amount of time, “ this old dog,” and namely the song “ on the level” is how i was first introduced to demarco. his demos are mostly compilations of samples (or demonstrations) of extra work from the creative process that was ultimately left off of his other albums and lp’s, containing mostly unfinished tunes and verses, and all five are named identically with the titles of some of his other projects (“ 2 demos,” “ salad days demos,” “ some other ones,” “ another (demo) one,” and “ old dog demos“).ĭemarco’s other discography includes the lp’s “rock and roll night club” and “another one,” which were released in 20, respectively. as a solo artist, demarco has released 10 total bodies of work, including five demos, three albums, and two lp’s. album titled “ EYEBALLING” and the studio album titled “ YING YANG.”Īfter the band disbanded (get it?) in 2011, demarco began making music by himself. Since HEAT WAVE!, makeout videotape has followed up with three more eps, titled “ EATING LIKE A KID,” “ BOSSA YEYE,” and “ WEIRD MEATS EP.” the group also released one compilation album and one studio album in their three-month history, the comp. the debut ep was titled “ HEAT WAVE!,” and it released in 2009. after growing tired of this, he moved back to vancouver and self-released his first of many eps with his band makeout videotape, which was formed in 2008.
